Prior to starting Oosterbaan Indexing Service in 2006, Gerben Oosterbaan taught History, Writing, Science, Reading and Mathematics in upper elementary and middle school grades. Outside activities for the school included initiating and editing a newsletter for the school teacher organization and coaching or assisting with various sports. Communication skills learned are now valuable in the indexer-publisher and indexer-author relationship.

Degrees include a Master of Arts in Education from Western Michigan University and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Calvin College. He holds a certificate of completion of the USDA Graduate School Basic Indexing Course.

Indexing since 2006, Gerben has been and continues as a member of in the American Society for Indexing (ASI), participates in the History/Archaeology and Science/Medicine special interest groups, contributes to an Indexing Peer Review Group, and attends meeting of the Chicago Chapter of the ASI.

Eight of the books he has indexed have been multiple–index projects, including six books needing an Index of Scripture and/or an Index of Ancient Sources in addition to the Index of Subjects.

He has written published articles for Writer’s Journal and Cross and Quill magazines.
